Post-Procedure Care For Dental Implants

Dental implants are arguably one of the most forward developments in dentistry. They serve as the closest possible solution to damaged or missing natural teeth, and you can achieve excellent results.

Implants are a permanent solution that is designed to last a long time, but they do require special care. Below are important steps to take to ensure your implants are looked after and you don’t have to end up having them done again.

Looking After Your Implants the Day of Surgery

  1. Bleeding

On the day of your treatment, keep biting down on the gauze packs that you’ll get when you receive dental implants Sydney dentists are offering. The packs can be removed about an hour after the procedure. If you notice that the bleeding continues, place a new gauze in the area for another 30 minutes. Keep doing this until the bleeding stops.

    2.Oral hygiene

Maintain good oral hygiene habits to keep your mouth clean after the procedure. Remember to brush your teeth gently and if there’s little to no bleeding, you can rinse your mouth with saltwater 24 hours after your procedure.

   3. Manage swelling and pain

To manage any swelling and pain, make sure you follow your dentist’s instructions. Take the dental implant pain medication as instructed and apply ice to reduce swelling.

   4.Watch what you eat

Try to avoid chewing foods until sensation has returned to your mouth. Stick to pureed goods and liquids for a day or two after your surgery and avoid hot foods and seeds that could get lodged in the area.

The Week After the Procedure

  1. Oral hygiene

In the week following your dental implant surgery, keep rinsing your mouth out 2 – 3 times a day, especially after every meal. Mix a quarter teaspoon of salt with 250ml warm water to rinse out your mouth. Make sure you use the entire solution. As for brushing your teeth, pay attention to the areas around the healing implants. Keep the area clean, but only brush gently for the first week after surgery.

     2. Bruising

Bruising of the tissue underneath the implants is relatively common and tends to occur around 2 to 3 days after the implant surgery. Apply heat to the affected area to help speed up the healing process.

  3. Managing any other symptoms

Having dental implants placed in your mouth might lead to dry lips, so do keep them moist with an ointment or lip balm. It’s also common to experience difficulty swallowing or a sore throat since your throat muscles can swell. Your dental implant specialist will give you advice on which pain medication to use in such instances.

Some patients also experience stiff jaw muscles in the seven days post-surgery for dental implants. If this happens to you, make sure you make the effort to stretch your jaw muscles every day to release the tension.

Overall, pay careful attention to the dental implant after-care provided by your dentists after the surgery. Everybody’s mouth is different, so if you do experience any other problems with your dental implants and you don’t know how to treat it, contact your dentist right away.
